Media Fast

Oh, the infamous media fast. Wildly enough, I've done one of these before, but not intentionally. Last summer I traveled to Daytona, FL with Campus Outreach. We were not allowed to bring computers, my phone was internet-less, and we also did not have television in our rooms. Talk about a fast from media. I loved it, but I found this particular media fast much more tempting because I was still surrounded by my oh-so-loved media.

What did I miss most?
Facebook. I realized my automatic intentions to check facebook whenever I have some down time. Instead, I played guitar and watched television.
Poor planning on my part, I began to customize my tumblr (www.kelleysue.tumblr.com) the day before the fast, and had the strangest urge to keep perfecting its' look. So sad, so sad. I managed to fight the urge, but that was definitely the most tempting.

Where did I fall?
I may have forgotten to mention this little media fast to my mother. Big mistake.
She kept texting all morning, and I kept trying to put it off, but had to eventually respond to her before she reported me to a Missing Persons agency.

How did this influence me?
Social media plays a pretty major role in my life. Especially after taking the social media course, I'm very much interested in checking my Twitter for updates on the causes I'm following. I felt out of the loop. I felt bored, and the rainy weather surely didn't help. I cannot imagine not having cell phones and texting. We might have to actually take time to build real relationships again, and be selfless enough to set aside time to talk with someone over a regular phone. Heaven forbid, huh? Pretty convicting.

I know I can function without media, but it truly is a struggle when you've known a life filled with media your entire time on earth. I think I'm more drawn to social media in particular because of my interest in Public Relations and Non Profit Management, but I do believe it's something I should be able to function without. I love Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, et cetera, et cetera, but I wish I could remain somewhat old fashioned.

...I won't count on it.

Henry Jenkins Reflection

Wow. What an interesting man. I honestly expected a "social media guru" to be someone I wouldn't quite be able to follow, but he is such a personable, passionate individual. It was inspiring to see how he truly had a complete understanding of social media and his topic(s) of interest. With one question, he replied with at least a 4 minute response. This man loves what he does. He has encouraged me as a young, thriving student to seek out my passions. So much can be done with one topic, and just through research you can discover a plethora of outlets to express yourself and your interests.

I was beyond impressed with his knowledge base and ability to answer our questions in the most effective manner he knew we as students would be able to understand. In my opinion the most influential advice he gave dealt with brands and how to integrate your brand into the community interest. I find this helpful because I am seeking to be employed within a non profit organization where I will be responsible for conducting community outreach. Being able to more distinctly understand how to tap into the emotional aspect of my surrounding community will be the most effective tactic. I never quite realized how important a blog and personal testimonies of those involved in your organization could be in gaining community support. I also never paid much attention to the impact of brand reputation by those who blog and are fans of certain products. A fan base is so essential in building the support by your community.

I think overall, I am just so impressed by his sincerity and seeing how passionate he actually is about this subject. This was truly inspiring, and I am so appreciative of him taking the time to share all of his experiences with us. Thank you, Henry Jenkins!

Henry Jenkins Questionaire

I'm personally more interested in the aspect of student research and how we as students can contribute to dissecting the social media realm. I have researched how he has used student's knowledge and skills to conduct research at MIT, but would like to ask him to...
"Further expand on what role student research played while composing Convergence Culture."

Social Media Profile Outline

I had originally planned on Fayette Community Church being my client, but they are in a phase of transition as they have just moved buildings and have decided to change the church name. That being said, I've decided GCTV News may be the best candidate for this project. I've contacted Stephen Price, and he agrees this would be a smart move for GCTV News. Also, I plan to remain the PR Practitioner for GCTV News in fall 2010, so I will be able to maintain the social media status.

Outline:

1) Gained permission from Stephen Price

2) I plan to create a blogger account for GCTV News and will update the site after each show explaining upcoming show ideas, what's going on behind the scenes, posting pictures and videos, and even posting interviews with different cast members. I plan to make the blog as much of an entry way into the lives of the cast as possible. I want viewers to understand the sacrifice these students make, and for students to feel comfortable enough to volunteer. I also feel as if a blog will motivate the cast and crew because they will feel respected.

3) I have already created a Twitter account for GCTV News during the spring practicum. I plan to take the account and gain followers primarily in our college community and the Milledgeville community. I then plan to follow people who could be potential sponsors and other college news teams. It would be encouraging for GCTV cast and crew to receive praise for videos, etc. That being said, I will obviously post the links to the existing GCSU youtube website and promotional event pages.

4) We have already created a Facebook page for GCTV News. I believe we effectively used this page during the spring semester, but plan on finding new ways to reach our viewers. I would like to add more friends, especially targeting Freshman at GCSU, and will also use the facebook to post videos and photo albums for GCTV News.

5) Steve mentioned GCTV News not having a website all to themselves, so this may be an option worth discussing throughout the semester. Until then, we may use the student media website.

6) I would like to create an email for GCTV News for viewers to send comments, and will also use the blog to seek feedback.

7) Steve had not mentioned whether or not they would be interested in LinkedIn, but I don't think I will use this outlet. I may focus primarily on building community recognition and sponsorship within Milledgeville. It will benefit GCTV News more so in the long run.

Two and Three.

Ch.2
After reading chapter 2 in which advertising was primarily discussed, I can say I agree with Henry Jenkins when he explains the different avenues that advertisers are more than willing to 1)take the time to research and find 2) plan a strategy, and 3) implement that strategy no matter the costs. If advertisers discover a route to directly target the emotions of its consumers, you better believe they will be taking that road.
I believe advertisers take advantage of the opportunity to target emotions because it does in fact create a loyalty among consumers. Once you have formatted your program with characteristics to adhere to their emotional needs, a loyal consumer or viewer will notice when a change is implemented. When this change does happen, it often leaves the consumer feeling betrayed and strangely causing a need to become more attached than before. The recognition of your loyalty to a brand may seem odd at first, but when a social community provides support (as explained in ch.1 with Survivor), the consumer is empowered to voice their feelings, and continue to grow in interest, whether positive or negative, in the product. Either way, this tactic creates an increased attention towards the outlet and, if a television series, higher ratings.

Ch.3
Transmedia storytelling. I had never heard of such, but I can say I find it interesting. Henry Jenkins defines transmedia storytelling as, "storytelling across multiple forms of media with each element making distinctive contributions to a viewer/user/player's understanding of the story world."
Hm.
So, producers can create different media platforms and format a show to allow consumers to become, well, consumed. Really when you look at any type of advertising over the years, there's an understanding that they are in a sense manipulating the audience, and yet we still pay attention. Because of encyclopedia ambitions (another term of Jenkins'), a show can be produced and formatted in such a way that it leads the consumer to believe there is more than meets the eye. We as the viewers begin to conjure up our own theories of what might happen, and how the story will unfold. Producers leaves clues here and there; ones steering our minds in the right direction, confirming our initial beliefs, and then those throwing us completely off the path.
I'm not sure I agree with this manipulative strategy, but it works, so until otherwise, I'm almost positive this theory will continue to be practiced.

Atlanta is now ranked as one of the highest U.S. cities for Sex Trafficking.

  • There are approximately 4,000 strippers who work at the 40 adult clubs in the metro Atlanta area
  • There are prostitution-related activities around most public schools in Atlanta
  • In 2004, the Fulton County Child Advocacy Center reviewed 863 cases, of which 88% were African American and 84% were girls

The community in support of Sex Trafficking in Atlanta seems to be growing rapidly. Blogs pertaining to this are being recognized by additional media outlets and being asked to share their mission. This cause is in desperate need of recognition. Most websites focus first on educating the public, but even still we are being called to act.

Spoiler Alert! [day two]

Chapter 1

The start of Convergence Culture by Henry Jenkins left me with the realization that I do not know nearly enough about social media, or the internet in general. This chapter basically focused on "spoilers". What it means to be a spoiler, realistic examples from the Survivor series, and how becoming involved within a spoiler's forum manages to create a type of collective intelligence and community. 

Yes, I've heard of spoilers. No, I've never once followed their internet activity.
I don't think I've ever truly been so concerned with the outcome of a show to really pay attention to this type of cluster in social media. Then again, I've never been one for reality television (apart from The Hills..not sure what you'd consider that..). I feel like my opinions on spoilers in general is fairly skewed.

At first I thought these internet fan-forums feeling threatened by spoilers were just, well, silly. I still don't completely understand, but I do seem to be grasping the sense of empowerment through a community. I think that's what Jenkins is referring to when he expands on collective intelligence. Jenkins says, "It is the social process of acquiring knowledge." Each person encounters empowerment through their ability to contribute social knowledge: ideas and opinions from individual experiences. Whether an experience from a trip abroad, educational achievements, or sharing beliefs; the willingness and motivation to expose themselves to a community of fans and to receive support will continue to motivate the contributor to share thoughts more openly. So interesting.

Something I never even knew was that television series' producers will create a format within the show through which viewers may catch onto and be able to possibly figure out an ending. Who knew!!...I wonder what The Hills producers are up to...

I do find it almost pathetic that we as an audience can no longer watch a television show or read a book without some sort of internet forum threatening to spoil the ending. With social media becoming more difficult to ignore, the ability we had to easily distance ourselves from this type of social conversation may be something we have no choice but to be immersed in.

Day One- Social Media Defined

Social media. What is it? Why does it matter? How does it influence me personally? Strangely enough, I've thought through these questions once before. Not the most deep thoughts ever, but it happened none the less. For me, like most things, I manage to perceive social media as being a means of making a movement. Social media has taken the ability to truly influence and, yes I'm saying it, change the world and made it available to each and every human being. It completely blows my mind.

True, social media manages to make my head spin every now and then, but literally having the world at your fingertips seems to be worth the headaches. I almost feel convicted that I haven't truly created a movement for an organization or a mission I am passionate about. I suppose that's another aspect of social media I cannot help respecting: your social media persona may be completely defined by your passions. I love it.

Social media is a movement fueled by your passion.
For me, at least. :)

I even wonder if convergence plays into this in that social media outlets cause us to seek out and ultimately discover our passions.

These are all organizations I follow. Because these organizations have taken the initiative to create a presence within the social media realm, they are able to inform thousands of people of their missions. Through credible articles being posted, to links on how to volunteer at local events, it's amazing how much coverage and publicity (usually positive) these organizations have been able to establish and maintain.

Social media, I'm a fan.
